Helion advances work on generator building for Malaga fusion plant

On the heels of its $465 million Series G round, Everett-based fusion energy company Helion has cleared two hurdles in its effort to build the state's first commercial fusion power plant in Central Washington.

The Washington Department of Health recently granted Helion two licenses that signify it can safely handle radioactive materials and airborne emissions, a major step for the company and the 50-megawatt fusion plant it is building for Microsoft.

Helion's Orion facility — located in Malaga, roughly 150 miles east of Seattle — is expected to generate 50 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, enough to power an average-sized data center.

A commercial fusion power plant could be a significant turning point in the evolution of data centers, which absorb electricity and community backlash in large amounts.
