WV water agency director fined for storing furniture at state office

A state agency director in West Virginia was ordered to pay $4,500 in fines and restitution Thursday, after admitting he stored his personal furniture at his government office for three years.

Chris Jarrett, executive director of the West Virginia Water Development Authority, acknowledged he violated ethics laws by using his state job for private gain, according to an agreement he signed with the state Ethics Commission.

The commission’s yearlong investigation found that Jarrett kept 12 pieces of his personal furniture — desks, credenzas, chairs, a couch and conference table — in a storage room at the water authority’s headquarters building for three years.

Jarrett didn’t remove the furniture until March 2016, shortly after the Ethics Commission notified him he was being investigated.
