West Virginia ethics panel exempts 6 Tomblin officials for post-government jobs

After the West Virginia Ethics Commission approved employment exemptions for six ranking members of the Tomblin administration Thursday, Chairman Robert Wolfe responded to criticism that the commission routinely approves all exemption requests, saying it’s about transparency in government.

“This really is to put sunlight on these people,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons you see us grant them all.”

Without the exemptions, under the state Ethics Act, full-time public officials and ranking employees cannot seek employment with businesses or individuals regulated by their agency for one year after leaving public service.

Wolfe said it would be highly difficult for governors to recruit staff, if the reality was that they would not be able to work in the private sector anywhere in the state for one year afterward.
