A Wisconsin couple say they killed a bear that attacked them inside their home after they spotted it eating from their bird feeder.
The Taylor County Sheriff's Office said the attack happened around 11 p.m. Friday at a home near Medford in north-central Wisconsin. The couple told authorities that a black bear charged through a window after they yelled at it to go away, the office said.
Both the husband and wife were injured before they were able to stab the bear with a kitchen knife. Eventually, the man was able to grab a firearm and kill the animal.

(106,304 posts)I can't believe they were not warned and had it directly outside their kitchen window. You put out a banquet and the bears WILL come. This wasn't inner-city Miami, but BEAR COUNTRY in WISCONSIN.
So, I'm glad they weren't hurt badly, but I can't get past the level of ignorance.
In my neck o' the woods we have fines for hanging out bird feeder because of bears. And some people foolishly think that black bear, for some reason, are less dangerous than grizzly bears. A bear is a bear and any bear can kill and eat you if they discover that you are made out of meat, easy to kill and they fancy that taste.

(41,348 posts)They dont clean up after themselves and leave food laying around on picnic tables next to their campsite. Or worse, leave open containers of food in their tents. Food needs to be properly stored even inside campers and travel trailers.
Leaving food out in the open is like being a welcome committee for bears.

(72,450 posts)The # of unprovoked black bear attacks on people is next to nothing. BTW if you are dumb enough
to have a bird feeder out in bear country and you see a bear eating the seed leave him or her alone
and then put the feeder away and then plant some native plants that will host the native insects that
the birds will feed to their young.

whatever the bear was going to do was fine by me.
A really good book: Plant native and help nature.

(the bear doesn't have your money. Hopefully it will feel awkward enough about it to avoid you.)
