I've been doing some reading lately about murdered and missing people in my area and was surprised at how many were aboriginal women. I am at least glad to hear that the solve rate is the same, but this is clearly a huge issue. I'm not sure what can be done, other than to concentrate on lifting aboriginal women out of poverty, since that could be one of the issues. According to Wab Kinew on CBC as well as some of the statistics gathered by the RCMP, it's not because things like domestic violence are worse among aboriginals (it's lower, actually) so we have to do some studying to find out what it is. I'd really like there to be an inquiry.

(8,646 posts)I figured that was a given but I suppose I shouldn't have assumed seeing as this is DU. But what is it that is specifically different with aboriginal women that causes them to suffer violence disproportionately as compared with the majority?

(30,151 posts)so it makes sense that those women receive the brunt of it all from every side. Instead of incredible pride in their heritage they are shunned and scorned and treated terribly and until now no one seemed to notice.

(8,646 posts)I've lived in northern aboriginal communities. I have a Métis uncle and cousin. I've seen it. I believe exactly what you said - and that is why they are being killed in higher numbers...I just wanted to see what others thought.
