Related: About this forumSuper simple "wood butter" recipe (aka spoon oil)
Wood butter/spoon oil is used on wood cutting boards, wooden spoons, rolling pins, etc to moisturize and bring back the wood. Wood isn't supposed to be washed but I'd bet most of us do it. Follow the link below and the recipe is included.

At only two ingredients it's definitely worth a shot!
(I've cross-posted this in a couple of forums at the advice of another poster. Originally posted in Crafts but this also fits in a few forums. I'm not spamming-just posting what could be something worthwhile.)

(38,197 posts)I have been using two wooden spoons forever now. They both need something, but I didn't know what. I knew it had to be some kind of oil or something. Everywhere I searched, I only saw time and again NOT to use vegetable oil (it becomes rancid and you don't want that). Then, I saw a place that said to use food grade mineral oil. I asked for that at the grocery store thinking the mineral oil they sell at the box stores might not be the right kind. They didn't even know what that was.
So, this new set of wooden spoons I just bought has been sitting there unused until I can find the right thing to use to condition them before I start using them. w00t! Now, I will be able to use my new wooden spoons and do something for my poor pitiful old wooden spoons too.
Thank you for this post. I heard about this group tonight and looked it up. The first thing I saw was this OP. How lucky is that?

(29,759 posts)I still haven't used the product but it's supposed to be really good. I read a few posts about this in other places and they've mentioned how they were able to purchase crappy old wood bowls in bad shape from rummage sales, used the product, and made them quite usable.
Now that you've found one thing here, you'll have to hang out!

(38,197 posts)for her problems with constipation for years. Usually, I just give her about a teaspoon from time to time when she is having trouble. My grandmother used to take a tablespoon every once in a while and said it made a much more natural laxative and stomach "settler" than most of the stuff you buy for that purpose. It always worked for her too.
So, I knew it could be taken in that way, but I did not know about the vegetable oil being a problem with the 2 older wooden spoons I have. It turned them dark and they never seemed to get clean again. What happens with vegetable oil is that it breaks down and becomes rancid. Well, the word I read was a different word than rancid, but meant pretty much the same thing, but I cannot remember it right off the top of my head. In any case, vegetable oil breaks down and spoils in a way that you don't want to use the spoons after that.
Apparently, with mineral oil, that doesn't happen. So, this recipe is just what I was looking for. I am treating the box the new spoon set came in too. It is also wooden. It really makes the wood shine and brings out the natural beauty of it too.
