URGENT: Is this a Phishing scam/attack?
I did not click anything.
Why the you-know-what would Microsoft give a rat's ass about Gmail?
Please advise if y'all know anything about this one.

(20,987 posts)I don't click links related to password stuff in emails. Period.
But then, most reputable services don't ask you to.
How this one got through the spam filter baffles me, though.

(20,987 posts)As far as I know I don't have any "Microsoft accounts."
The juxtaposition between the two was a red flag.
As far as I know they are not best buds.

(901 posts)then someone else is messing with your account. Microsoft then wants you to go to the link and reset your password. I've done it myself before. This is the reset your password page:
https://account.live.com/resetpassword.aspx

(3,977 posts)if you google the phrase "Your Microsoft Account has been renamed" you will see its been going a while a few different forms

(1,735 posts)And clean your cookies. Might be a good idea to change your password. Microsoft won't contact you.

(7,228 posts)They are saying that you have a microsoft account, for which you use your gmail address. Your gmail address has been changed at microsoft.

(10,252 posts)You can tell because they want you to click on "account.live.com". Microsoft would not have such a domain.

Yeah, this is phishing, very clumsily done phishing.
ETA: Don't believe any "Microsoft" phone calls, either. You call them, they never call you.

(20,987 posts)I already deleted it, after alerting GMail's anti-phishing team.
What I'm trying to resist is the temptation to think there's any connection at all with me having just posted some anti-Septic Sphincter material on social media.
paranoiacally,

(913 posts)There are many red flags here.
1. Changing an account name without you requesting it.
2. Gmail email account, vs the email is purportedly from Microsoft.
3. The website is "account.live.com", why isn't it microsoft.com, or gmail.com?
4. A generic request from "The Microsoft team".
5. the Big One: Asking for your password, or any other personal information.
