My high capacity genuine HP laserjet Q5949x cartridge went kaput

From the last measurement I took I think it had about 2300 pages on a 6000 hi-capacity cartridge. That's durability more like the regular capacity cartridge. The cartridge still seems heavy by weight to me, but I am convinced it's empty, I shook it and beat it and all I got was a final big blob that blistered on the final page. No I don't print heavy graphics or dense pages, I print labels.
So what happened? I bought the printer used, could the seller have rigged the existing page count at all? Not that it matters much but I guess I'm trying to reconcile the expected page count from the actual.
Do I need to reset the smart chip to accept the new cartridge? It works so far, 1 page printed.
Thanks.
______________ Update: Finally figured it out. the cartridge is genuine HP but with the serial # removed. One of the holes has been drilled, filled, and reglued to inject toner. So it could have toner in it, but I get good new off-brand units for $14 so this is a toss. Recycle at BBuy or Staples.
