http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2014/03/coerced-sex.aspxI would not have been surprised to see numbers on parity with what young women report at 1/6-1/4 depending on whose numbers you find more credible. 43% however is a big freaking number.
Unfortunately we have almost no historical context in which to examine this study so we don't know which way these numbers are trending which I think would also be a fascinating data point.

(29,257 posts)Is a far greater level of coercion than demonstrated by the PUA group that some conflate with near rape. Not naming names...

(29,257 posts)A tiny little thing -I wouldn't even call it more than a YouTube type of phenom- that some people in a protected group here on DU have called out as evidence of misogyny and near-rape behavior. Basically there assertion is that seducing is coercion is rape. That if you continue to try to wheedle someone into having sex, it is coercion. And that is fine to think that, I guess, as long as you are consistent.

(8,692 posts)When I was young there were a number of situations where I really didn't want to do something, but I wasn't entirely sure how to stop it either. She wouldn't take no for an answer and you "can't hit a girl" or you don't want to look like a whatever, you don't want to feel like you led her on or offend her and so forth. You might have not intended something to become sexual but don't want to jeopardize the relationship. That one hit me with an older woman I had considered a friend and mentor, but fooling around with an unhinged divorcee was not on my bucket list at that age.
You certainly don't talk about it with your friends or parents.

(6,151 posts)The OP title, of course, caught my eye on the front page.
I'm reminded of a groundbreaking tv show or movie a number of years ago, called 'The Rape of Richard Beck'. It was about a LEO who treated women rape victims rather badly; then the same thing happened to him and he fell to pieces. I believe Richard Crenna played the title role. Anyway, it was so far ahead of its time and so gut wrenching that rape counselors used it in their work. I believe if anyone could find a copy, it would be a valuable resource.

(13,324 posts)but are still ethically questionable at the least. I guess some women may need the "no means no" and "yes means yes" message just as much as some men do.
