'Starbucks fired me for being three minutes late'

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62426940

By Natalie Sherman

Staff at roughly 220 Starbucks stores across the US have voted to unionise, making unexpectedly successful inroads at the popular chain of coffee shops. But the movement is facing a precarious moment, as the economy slows and the company mounts a furious response.

Joselyn Chuquillanqui had worked for Starbucks for nearly seven years when the company fired her last month.

She had been waiting for the decision. Though she liked her job as a barista, which gave her flexibility to care for her young niece, this winter the 28-year-old had tried to rally her co-workers in New York to join a labour union, frustrated by the company's stance on sick leave during the pandemic.

Soon after, she says her boss started punishing her for infractions overlooked in others, like arriving a few minutes late for her 5:30am shift.

FULL story at link above.

Joselyn says the reasons Starbucks gave for her firing were excuses

I've seen a few of these stories. It reeks of corporate, anti-union intimidation.

It was when workers tried to unionize after WW 2. The fools who allowed the Government and Corporations now have to fight the Corporations, many in Government, crooked bosses and those who are still ignorant enough to blame it all on a few crooks in the Union.

The Government even sent the Pinkerton in to kill and break up strikes. Reagan put the demise of Unions in over drive.

Somebody tells 'em it's "sophisticated."

If you get involved in home coffee roasting, you learn that the flavor of beans (notes, they call it) comes out at the tail end of a light roast or in the medium roast stage.

More workers in more industries should seize this opportunity to unionize.

First, you screw up the person you are replacing’s time. Could that person be going to school, another job, day care to pick up kids. Being late can affect coworkers.

she worked an extra 5 minutes to finish up an order. Anyone who’s ever worked in a restaurant knows that.
