Told 18 and 19 I'll buy their union books as High school graduation present.
They took casual Dock job with a nationwide union LTL carrier you have seen their equipment all green tractors based out of fort smith Arkansas this outfit has a break bull hub about 35 miles from our home.
I was gonna go work for them as line haul driver after the yellow roadway merger yet ended up here at Buster brown anyhow they left 02:00 to train 03:00-07:00 maybe to 11am Monday to Friday this week on dock then get home for cyber school , which cyber school is this late in the game. And the school just loads assignments and they complete them when they can. Except for Wednesday afternoon when they meet online with cyber school director to go over anything they need.
This was the boys idea a friend of the fellas who graduated early is on list working 8 + shifts he told them cash he was making. I told them bank your cash i am writing the checks for tuition.
This summer after graduation they can go 8-10 hours and then come fall both off to local university. They have both decided they want to stay here and go to Shippensburg university in fall. Then work the docks next summer up to graduation if they want. Not bad job I mean or casual through the school year with straight and overtime this summer where else can a college kid make decent cash working full time in summer then casual throughout the year.
Come this fall 18 is gonna be studying math and 19 is studying Electrical Engineering. Told them both this morning stay focused get a education like your Mother and your sisters, made me smile this morning its gonna be 03:00-07:00 possibly 11am they took my old lunchbox cooler and it was packed I asked them if they were going on long trip or if they left any groceries in fridge. Oh here is the kicker they both took the Corolla gonna be 70 be around miles round trip for them Toyota its great on fuel economy my commute to work car why cuz 19 drives a 4 runner 18 drives pathfinder.

(3,455 posts)Good majors in school too. Math majors with advanced degrees are much in demand in many fields. And electrical engineering has lots of options too from micro and digital to power plants and everything in between. My kid is an EE and he went the digital route with Apple and now Microsoft but when he graduated the power companies were begging for applicants. It's not as leading edge and well paid as the tech world but as my kid is now learning it is also less subject to lay offs. He's okay for now but he has only seen high demand and multiple job offers until the layoffs started so he is watching as friends that were highly paid are getting laid off and no longer getting great job offers.
