A Cool Move: UPS Trucks To Have Air Conditioning, Fans Under Proposed Contract
United Parcel is known for having delivery vehicles with no doors. But that soon could change.
Teamsters Union leaders announced Tuesday that the company has reached a tentative agreement to add air conditioning systems, new heat shields and additional fans.
The union and UPS are in negotiations ahead of a possible strike. The current contract expires Monday, July 31, and leaders of the Teamsters have approved a strike if theres no settlement by then.
The open-air vehicles allow UPS drivers practically to stand as they drive, then step off and on when making deliveries.
But NBC News reports those dark brown trucks can get red-hot during summer. Federal inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have documented heat index readings as high as 126 degrees.
