LINCOLN — An effort to shorten by nearly 40% the amount of time Nebraskans can draw unemployment benefits ran into a filibuster Tuesday that left the bill’s future uncertain.

Lawmakers debated Legislative Bill 1170 for about four hours of the eight hours needed before a filibuster-ending cloture vote could be taken.

But the bill is not on Wednesday’s agenda and State Sen. Merv Riepe of Ralston, who introduced the measure, said he doesn’t know if he will ask for it to be scheduled again.

“I’m not going to bring it back just to waste time,” he said, noting that he does not have the 33 votes needed for a cloture vote to succeed.
