China harnesses hydrogen tech to power green shift
Xinhua | huaxia | 2025-03-29
China's first unmanned hydrogen-electric hybrid mining truck -- powered by hydrogen energy and electric batteries, and capable of cutting over 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually -- stole the spotlight at the recent China International Hydrogen Congress (CIHC) 2025.
Deployed at the Shengli coal mine in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where winter temperatures could plunge to minus 40 degrees Celcius, this high-tech hauler doesn't flinch, proving that the green tech can thrive in harsh conditions, according to project lead Geng Hao. "Even in extreme cold, its hydrogen system stays rock-solid."
Other frontier hydrogen energy technologies, including hydrogen-powered shunting locomotives and smart hydrogen refueling robots, are also on display at the exhibition, exemplifying China's achievements in expanding hydrogen applications and building a green hydrogen ecosystem...
....In recent years, China has made significant strides in advancing policies for hydrogen development. In March 2022, Chinese authorities released a plan on the development of hydrogen energy for the 2021-2035 period, outlining the establishment of a hydrogen supply system and application promotion goals...more

(35,417 posts)1. In China, the manufacture of hydrogen releases 322 million tons of carbon dioxide.
It's filthy, and all the slick videos in the world put out by fossil fuel interests to greenwash their product will not change that fact:

Subsidizing Grid-Based Electrolytic Hydrogen Will Increase Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Coal Dominated Power Systems Liqun Peng, Yang Guo, Shangwei Liu, Gang He, and Denise L. Mauzerall Environmental Science & Technology 2024 58 (12), 5187-5195
The text is clear enough.
From the introductory text:
... Currently, nearly all hydrogen in China is either produced directly from fossil fuels (55% from coal gasification and 14% from steam methane reforming (SMR)) or as a byproduct of petroleum refining (28%), with only 1% coming from water electrolysis. (2) Producing 1 kg of coal- or SMR-based hydrogen emits roughly 19 and 10 kg of CO2, respectively. (3) In 2020, hydrogen production from fossil fuels in China emitted ∼322Tg of CO2, equivalent to 25% of total CO2 emissions from industrial processes, a number expected to rise with increasing hydrogen demand. (4) Industrial processes include production of nonmetallic mineral products, chemical, and metal products, as well as production and consumption of halocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. (4)
