World's first 30MW pure hydrogen gas turbine project breaks ground in Ordos

On Aug 8, construction began on the world's first 30-megawatt (MW) pure hydrogen gas turbine and hydrogen storage demonstration project in the Otog High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Ordos, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

The launch marks a major breakthrough for China in hydrogen power generation and long-duration energy storage, offering a replicable Chinese solution for the global energy transition.

Designed with a hydrogen production capacity of 48,000 Nm³ per hour, the project pioneers the "electricity–hydrogen–electricity" model: using renewable energy such as wind and solar to produce green hydrogen via electrolysis, storing it, and then converting it into stable, zero-carbon power through a 30MW pure hydrogen gas turbine. This integrated approach smooths renewable energy fluctuations, provides critical grid flexibility, and supports large-scale hydrogen applications.

By the end of 2025, the project aims to complete the world's largest capacity trial of a pure hydrogen gas turbine. Its demonstration is expected to accelerate the coordinated development of China's entire hydrogen energy industry chain, foster technological innovation, and help turn Inner Mongolia into a national hydrogen energy hub, offering a strong model for a clean energy transition in China and beyond.
