DOGE and the deluge: The hits on our cherished public recreation lands just keep coming

The U.S. Forest Service is just out with a self-examination of its national recreation infrastructure, and it isn’t pretty. The report from our half dozen national forests speaks of “critical vacancies, staff reassignments, seasonal hiring restrictions, imploding trail maintenance, and partner support.”

The 164 million acre system has been hit by two perfect storms.

An atmospheric river in January washed out trails, campgrounds and access roads.across the Pacific Northwest. The Project 2025 DOGE scheme to sabotage government, under Elon Musk, has ravaged its corps of overseers.

Asked to sum it all up, Gary Paull, retired trails/recreation director in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, said: “Oh boy, what a mess. Don’t know where to start.” Perhaps with the appalling failure to fill Paull’s position.

They are destroying our recreational enjoyment of America's natural heritage while poisoning the environment by turning the EPA into a lobby for polluters.

They are destroying the Fourth Estate of journalistic integrity by concentrating huge swaths of the media landscape into fewer hands, poisoning once respected news sources like CBS News and the Washington Post.

And their support of Trump is ravaging communities with ICE raids while destroying our nation's role as leader of the free world, turning the USA into a despised authoritarian regime not to be trusted diplomatically or economically.

We are on the brink of seeing the demise of America's great experiment in democracy with the destruction of our Constitutional rule of law that is already under way.

We have to rise up in ever greater numbers to put a stop to this, from now into No Kings on March 28 and through the November elections.
