That betrayal explains why Russia’s neighbors no longer trust Moscow’s promises. Putin warned Armenia over its possible EU path, accused Finland after it joined NATO in 2023, and watched Sweden join NATO in 2024 after more than 200 years of non-alignment. Latvia faces Belarusian pressure, Moldova is moving toward EU talks, and the Baltics are cutting Russian influence from schools.

Putin invaded Ukraine to break the West, but Ukraine exposed the weakness behind Russia’s threats. NATO grew larger, Europe began pouring money into defense, former Russian partners invited Western support, and Moscow’s poor regions are paying the human cost. Putin wanted the old empire back. His war made that empire run from him.
