Palestinians warn of 'chaos' if US embassy moved to Jerusalem

Blackmail. Pure and simple. There's no reason an embassy can't exist in west Jerusalem. In no scenario would that ever become any part of a Palestinian state.

BETHLEHEM: A senior Palestinian official warned US president-elect Donald Trump Friday that moving the American embassy to Jerusalem would destroy prospects of peace with Israel and push the region into turmoil.

The remarks by the secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Saeb Erekat, came as Israeli officials praised Trump's decision to nominate hardliner David Friedman as envoy to the Jewish state.

The Palestinians regard east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv before a final agreement on the conflict "will be the destruction of the peace process," Erekat told journalists.

He also warned of the potential outcome of moving the embassy and a change in the "longstanding position" of the United States that considers "the settlements as illegal".

"I look David Friedman and Trump in the eye and tell them -- if you were to take these steps of moving the embassy and annexing settlements in the West Bank, you are sending this region down the path of something that I call chaos, lawlessness and extremism," he said.

1. Negotiation?

Isn't that just part of a negotiation process? If you believe in the 2 states solution, how is Palestine being accepted at UNICEF such a bit deal that the USA should stop financing the UNICEF? It is because Palestine is not YET a nation and this should be part of the negotiation process. The US, a strong ally of Israel has opposed Israel moving its capital from Tel Aviv to Jersulem from 1949 and the vast majority of other countries keep their representations in Tel Aviv...To say the move is nothing is exaggerated.

understand the problem with moving the embassy to Jerusalem.
It would be in the western part of Jerusalem, not the old city. Even if Israel were to pull completely back to the 1949 armistice lines, it still would be within Israel proper.

Erekat said he would immediately resign as the chief Palestinian negotiator, and that “the PLO will revoke its recognition of Israel” as well as all previously signed agreements with Israel.

Furthermore, said Erekat, all American embassies in the Arab world would be forced to close — not necessarily because Arab leaderships would want to close them, but because the infuriated public in the Arab world would not “allow” for the embassies to continue to operate.
