It's the area where, after the expulsion of the Jews from Russia (without special residency permission) Jews could live. Many a Jew has gene that resided for a while in (the) Ukraine. (Not a country at the time, but a territory.)

Then there's just the overarching familiarity with being a minority bullied by a majority ... with the pluck to f**k over your bullies.

One of the founding fathers of Zionism and the idea of a Jewish homeland was Zhabotinsky. He was a Ukrainian Russian from Odesa, wrote and spoke in the late 1800s. He was instrumental in founding Irgun. His son was also important in Israeli history.
