Tel Aviv Court Verdict Reveals Al Jazeera's Alleged Ties to Hamas, Challenges Media Freedom Narratives

The Tel Aviv-Jaffa District Court has issued a ruling finding a “close connection” between the international news network Al Jazeera and the Palestinian group Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, and the European Union.

The court’s deputy president, Shai Yaniv, has pointed to material evidence, including a controversial clip broadcast by Al Jazeera that was perceived as providing tactical information on damaging Israeli military assets. Yaniv highlighted the severity of these actions by stating, ““The picture that emerges from the documents demonstrates categorically (and) with convincing, clear and unambiguous evidence the close, long-term connection between the Hamas terror organization and the Al Jazeera media network, with the Hamas terror organization advancing its goals through the channel.”

Al Jazeera’s broadcasts have been described as real-time positioning of Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops, which was argued to place soldiers in danger, an act far removed from conventional journalistic practice. Moreover, one specific Al Jazeera broadcast was said to contain a “briefing for how to damage an Israeli tank” with the judge noting that the “clip indicates weak points on the tank and explains how to act to damage the tank and destroy it.”

Though Al Jazeera has categorically denied these accusations, arguing that its reporting does not incite violence and that it maintains a range of confidential sources across the Israeli and Palestinian spectrum, the court has been unpersuaded by these defences. The court has also made a comparison to a recent decision by the General Court of the European Union upholding a ban on the Russian state-sponsored RT France channel, suggesting that, at times, freedom of the press may be secondary to national security.

It doesn't say that in your links.

One of your links is to a report on a Hamas flyer containing instructions for the October 7 butchers. The other link goes to a report about a reinforcement feature that the IDF is installing on tanks.

They give info on how to damage an Israeli tank indicating weak points on the tank, how to act to damage the tank and destroy it.

The links contain a general discussion about tank vulnerabilities, written by a staff writer who covers defense and aerospace.

David Axe writes about ships, planes, tanks, drones and missiles.

Al Jazeera is Qatari state media, and Al Jazeera Arabic has a strong Islamist slant. It's a propaganda organ with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. That Al Jazeera Arabic is also Hamas-adjacent should surprise no one.

Al Jazeera is based out of the same country that hosts the leaders of Hamas, is anyone really surprised if there are ties between Al Jazeera and Hamas?
