Remember this flyer? Remember the outrage it generated on DU? How many of you know today that this is a fake?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Lithos (a host of the Israel/Palestine group).

How many scoffed at IDF denials of having anything to do with it? Well. wadya know?

ABC News retracts claim that Israeli ‘occupation forces’ dropped ‘harrowing’ leaflet in Gaza

The original article, published Thursday morning, initially focused on the leaflets and listed four reporters on the byline. Only one, Jordana Miller, regularly covers Israel’s war with Hamas. She has also repeatedly and openly pushed a bias against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Miller and another journalist were stripped from the byline after ABC News updated the story.

“[T]he world map will not change if all the people of Gaza vanish,” the pamphlets purportedly read, according to ABC News. They pushed Gazans to vacate “before the implementation of Trump’s forced plan—which will impose your forced displacement whether you like it or not.”...“No one will feel for you, and no one will ask about you. You are left alone to face your inevitable fate,” the leaflets purportedly added. “Neither US nor Europe cares about Gaza. The game is almost over, and only a little remains. Whoever wants to save themselves before it’s too late, we are here to stay until Judgment Day.”

ABC News retracted that claim and re-centered the article on IDF’s latest movements in Gaza. Israel resumed attacks on Tuesday after Hamas refused to release its remaining hostages: “Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article said that the IDF had dropped leaflets with disturbing messaging,” a disclaimer at the top of the updated version read. “ABC News has not been able to confirm the authenticity of these leaflets. The IDF denies dropping these leaflets.”

The original article, however, alleged that “occupation forces” had dropped the leaflets. That apparent reference to the IDF was also stripped from the updated version, without note.

A fake that was immediately picked up by the the anti-Israel blogosphere and spread like wild fire vs a tiny disclaimer way after the fake went viral.

That's how it works, folks.

1. ABC did not say they were fake.

"ABC News has not been able to confirm the authenticity of these leaflets." That is what they said. I personally don't care if it is fake or real. The flyer is inconsequential to what Israel is actually doing.

2. ABC did not say they were genuine. And it was on them to make sure they publish stuff

that stands up to scrutiny.

Journalistic integrity, you know. Or so they say.

Oh, and while you don't care, it's still fake.

And if you want to talk about journalistic integrity maybe don't use a media site that has a pop up with "Help Israel win the media war" and posts an article from The Washington Free Beacon where they list AOC, Obama, Beto, both Clintons, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala and many many more as "Enemies of Freedom". You literally posted a right wing article here on DU. Journalistic integrity indeed.

But seriously, after reading ABC's disclaimer, what makes you think that the flyer in question is genuine?

Do you by any chance post things that are not genuine without proof they are? Your response is rather ambiguous in this respect.

And whose journalistic integrity are you questioning? If it's ABC's, so do I. If it's mine, I am not a journalist. If it's the source I cited, it contains the exact same information as dozens of other sources. Are they all lacking journalistic integrity?

Have you ever considered addressing the message rather than blaming the messenger?

Your search came up with six links, 2 are the free beacon a haven for far right beliefs as already established, the second one is from israelhayom.com and the link doesnt work, the 3rd JNS list israelhayom.com as where it was originally written and once again the link doesnt work. The last one is just too funny. They have such great articles as "My Israel Story: Ambassador Mike Huckabee".
If you would like to go back and re-read all that I said I never said it was real at all. I didn't make any claims as to whether it was real or fake unlike you. I think I was pretty clear that I dont post things as true or false without evidence. I even said as much. When you create a post here you are a journalist, at least an amateur one like most of us so yes, I think you should re-examine your own journalistic integrity as all of should every time we post something.

8. So you don't like any of the sources I linked to, even though you found a bunch of them citing ABC's retrtaction.

ABC, not the sources you dislike, issued that retraction. And they did so after an earnest attempt (or so I would like to believe) to authenticate the flyer they reported on as being genuine to in fact be genuine. And they failed to do so. What you think about the sources that reported this is irrelevant to what ABC retracted.

Are you disputing the authenticity of ABC's retraction? No? So why are you wasting my time on blaiming the messengers again?

Are you saying that ABC's inability to confirm the authenticity of the flyer somehow makes the flyer not a fake just because YOU didn't say it is or isn't? That's absurd!

And you really made my day when you called me a journalist for posting on an anonymous board. By your standards, every friggin Qanon nutcase with a friggin smart phone is a friggin journalist! How can I possibly respond in kind to such an honorific? Ok, give me some time. Maybe I will, right after I stop laughing my ass off.

5. It's OK if you didn't. It's good that you saw it now. The important thing is that you know the flyer is a fake,

and that ABC published the flyer without confirming its authenticity.

There are probably thousands of people who saw it and still think it's genuine.
