The Brush & Nib Studios owners have won a major LGBTQ discrimination case despite never being accused of discriminating against anyone. Instead, the business preemptively sued for the right to refuse to print wedding invitations for gay and lesbian couples in an attempt to nullify the city of Phoenixs nondiscrimination law.
The company was represented by the anti-LGBT hate group, Alliance Defending Freedom. The devious group serves as the legal arm of the religious right activist movement and, conveniently enough, they wrote the companys operating agreement shortly before filing the lawsuit on their behalf.
In 2016, Brush & Nib sued Phoenix, arguing that the citys ban on discrimination violated the companys freedom of speech. Among other services, the newly-formed store wanted to print wedding invitations, but only for straight couples.
Co-owners Joanna Duka and Breanna Koski said that they were devout Christians who wanted to overturn the civil rights law before any complaints could be filed against them. The owners also wanted to post a sign saying that they refuse to serve same-sex couples.

(46,154 posts)Each day brings more reasons for why we may extend our stay outside the US to a permanent one. So much more at ease here in the EU.
We have only limited ties to US as it is, I was born in Los Angeles but my family moved back to the UK when I was still a baby. My wife was not even born in the US. We have been back on and off for a couple years, now are gone again as I am reading for my PhD here in the EU. IF Rump wins in 2020, we are so out for good, as the SCOTUS will probably end up 7-2 or even 8-1 (if Sotomayor's bad diabetes does her in) HARD RW for decades unless we somehow pull back the Senate whilst losing the EC, which seems highly unlikely.
The Rethugs want to role back ALL civil rights gains post Brown v. Board, and probably will try to roll even Brown back. Like hell if I am going to live in a nation that will be in constant motion in RW legal/political interlocked spheres trying to nullify our marriage.
