Stonewall after Skrmetti: Transgender people refuse to be erased

Roughly 70K LGBTQ kids in crisis sought specialized services from the national suicide hotline every month, their director tells me.

Trump wants to cut those servicea off on July 17.

Today, on the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, the transgender community is fighting back against the Trump administration’s attempts to write them out of the national story.

Just before noon on Feb. 13, 2025, the Stonewall National Monument’s official government website still celebrated “LGBTQ+” history. Sometime before 7:15 p.m. Eastern Time, Trump administration censors chopped off the “T” and the “+” from that acronym. By 9:45 p.m. ET, only the letters “LGB” were left standing.

That symbolic act of erasure has been emblematic of Donald Trump’s attacks on transgender people in his second term. On Day 1, Trump issued an executive order prohibiting so-called “gender ideology,” a phrase that seemed to refer to the existence of transgender and gender nonconforming people.

Trump’s anti-transgender onslaught ramped up from there in every area of public life within his reach: the military, prisons, passports, classrooms, healthcare and even crisis centers. The day before the Supreme Court’s opinion upheld Tennessee’s ban on transgender care for minors, Trump announced that he would end specialized LGBTQ care on the national suicide hotline on July 17.

Dear sheshe2,

I meant to reply to your post earlier and got sidetracked. I am so sorry!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU for sharing this. It was an honor to read it. I am so frustrated with everything going on now, in my personal life and the world that I am having a difficult time keeping up with anything. I'm glad you cared enough to share it and in my opinion, your post, as well as irisblue Stonewall post, should be in GENERAL DISCUSSION. Trans Rights, Stonewall, LGBTQ+ Rights, should all be in general discussion. I find it hard to believe that so few on DU have even bothered to read either post. I'm getting more frustrated everyday with folks.

Thank you, truly, again!

May You Be Healthy, Safe and Happy AND LOVED!

I thank you.

It is frightening out there and I hear you, I am depressed, scared and angry right now as well. I just don't know anymore, it gets worse every damn day.

Sending you love and hugs and hope that we will see some light at the end of the tunnel though I don't think that will happen anytime soon.
