Studies have shown that eating mushrooms can positively impact physical health and, according to new research, it appears that consuming fungi may be beneficial to one's mental well-being, too.
Researchers at Penn State's College of Medicine found that people who ate mushrooms were less likely to experience symptoms of depression, according to a study published Monday in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
Researchers pointed to the presence of ergothioneine for reducing depression levels in people who ate mushrooms. Studies have shown that antioxidants like ergothioneine may protect against cell and tissue damage and can help prevent bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia.
"Mushrooms are the highest dietary source of the amino acid ergothioneine an anti-inflammatory which cannot be synthesized by humans," lead researcher Djibril Ba said. "Having high levels of this may lower the risk of oxidative stress, which could also reduce the symptoms of depression."

(17,022 posts)and other cognitive functions. I've noticed that lion's mane mushrooms in particular are sold for this purpose. I love mushrooms, so now I have an excuse to eat even more of them. I especially love the crab-stuffed mushrooms, but I don't know how much those would help. I usually eat them swimming in butter, so I think my fat ass likes them as much as my brain does.

(12,871 posts)If I can't think of anything else to eat, I make that, with Swiss cheese, canned mushrooms and minced onions. I saute the mushrooms and onion in butter until browned then add the beaten eggs and cheese. I always considered it a lazy meal, now it's medicine!

(6,244 posts)I eat them raw, grilled with cheese in the cup - stems removed first, they go straight in my mouth - and as a pizza topping.
Sauteed gently in butter really brings out their subtle flavor.
Above omelet idea sounds good. Must try!
Not a fan of oyster mushrooms though.

(2,352 posts)He promotes a "G-BOMBS" diet---and I love me some 'shrooms. I try to make recipes from his book that I ordered after watching him on PBS. I don't think he includes the anti-depression properties, but he does highlight the anti-cancer properties of mushrooms.

Wife and I have gone vegan - not my idea - but a meatless diet can be good once you get used to it.

(17,094 posts)It doesnt say you CANT eat other things. But incorporating this into ones diet improves health and makes me less hungry for things NOT on the diet list.

(34,363 posts)I was a vegetarian for quite a long time then I got sick and could not eat fruits and veggies for several years. As soon as what I had cleared up, I was very lucky with that, I went back to being a vegetarian. I have found that mushrooms are my meat. Cheese as well. This is great news as I eat them daily. Cheese not as much but mushrooms are a must.
