Three-fourths of drug overdose deaths in 2020 involve opioids

NEW BLOOMFIELD — For the first time in history, more than 100,000 Americans overdosed in a year, making it the deadliest year on record in the drug epidemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported drug overdose deaths were up nearly 30% from the previous year.

Missouri saw a drop in drug-related overdose deaths by nearly 3.5% in 2019. A year later, drug overdose deaths have increased by 16.5%, and data from the state health department showed opioids were involved in roughly three-fourths of those deaths.

Within the last year, health officials said they saw an increase in drug overdose deaths.
