Sleeping eight hours a night could help with weight loss: study says
"If healthy sleep habits are maintained over longer duration, this would lead to clinically important weight loss over time. Many people are working hard to find ways to decrease their caloric intake to lose weight well, just by sleeping more, you may be able to reduce it substantially.

"Tackling weight gain can be challenging, but the solution may lie in simply getting more sleep, as researchers found sleeping more could help people lower their overall caloric intake by an average of 270 calories per day. "
"A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that by increasing sleep duration to 8.5 hours per night people reduced the number of calories consumed in a day and the long-term potential to gain weight. "
"Over the course of four weeks, researchers studied 80 adults aged 21 to 40 who were considered overweight and slept less than 6.5 hours per night. Through a randomized clinical trial, a portion of the study participants were asked to extend their sleep duration by 2.5 hours. The results found that those who slept 8.5 hours consumed less calories, with no changes requested to their diets or physical activity. "
"Researchers concluded that those who slept 8.5 hours a night reduced their overall caloric intake by an average of 270 calories per day, which translates to roughly 26 pounds of weight loss over three years. "

(36,165 posts)270 calories per day fewer than needed X 365 days per year X 3 years / 3500 calories per pound of fat = more than 84 lbs lost over 3 years.

(52,235 posts)I noticed that they said 27 pounds over 3 years. Then it occurred to me that it should be 27 pounds per year and that would give you 82 pounds over 3. Our math is better than theirs since ours shows you lose a lot more weight.... more incentive to sleep well. I wish I could.
