Untold documentary on the "Jail Blazers" available on Netflix
This might be interesting even if you don't like basketball but you can't really tell the history of the NBA from the late 90s to mid 2000s without mentioning the Portland Trail Blazers. You likely heard of the Shaq & Kobe Lakers well the Blazers when they had Rasheed Wallace, Damon Stoudemire, and Bonzi Wells (also Scottie Pippen) almost beat them before Shaq & Kobe won their first title together. They had a lead of 10-15 points heading into the 4th in game 7 of the Western Conference Finals but in the final quarter Portland missed over 10 shots in a row and LA was able to escape with a win and later the NBA championship which is where the documentary pretty much begins.
The documentary centers on the acquisition of Bob Whitsitt who was the GM hired by Blazers owner who was Paul Allen a co-founder of Microsoft but he sort of used a money ball approach to acquire players that may have "character issues" for good value and made most of his acquisitions via trades which was why he was nicknamed "Trader Bob". He did sign Scottie Pippen via free agency by promising him he would be the star on a championship team while if he went to LA Lakers he would have been the 4th star after Shaq, Kobe, and Phil Jackson (who won 6 titles with the Chicago Bulls before coaching the Lakers).
Instead of trying again with the same roster the GM kept adding new players who had even more character issues and he really jumped the shark in later seasons when he signed a sex offender to the team who even Rasheed Wallace didn't want on the team but the GM claims he was so desperate to find someone that can stop Kobe. It was also the following season is when their legal troubles started. As far as Rasheed Wallace being a hot head on the court and racking up a season record for technical fouls and Damon Stoudemire they just mostly used cannabis(very interesting story which the documentary covers of cops finding cannabis in Stoudemire's home after they claimed they were looking for a burglar which they claim his security alarm went off) . Bonzi Wells never been in trouble with the law but he had a quote in Sports Illustrated that was critical of fans so those reasons were why the local fan base turned against their own team.
Don't want to give too much away but a happy ending for Rasheed Wallace as after his career with Portland ended he later won a NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons defeating the Shaq & Kobe Lakers who were Portland's nemesis during that time period.
