A problem that never came up, came up last night. Thank goodness for small victories (clogged gutter)

I returned home from shopping last night, and the gutter was dripping onto the ground.

Saturday morning looks rain-free, so gather up a variety of pokers, grippers, leaf-blower, whatever, not including the garden hose, and up the extension ladder I go.

Context: I live on a ridge and there aren’t any trees near to, or taller than the house, so this is a mystery,

A quick look and the wind had blown a rag into the gutter and it found its way to he downspout.

So, using my left hand, away goes the rag and a lot of water heads down the spout.

STUFF HAPPENS. Very often, what you would never expect.

P.S. Never use an extension ladder without those optional arms that support it against the side of the house. Worth every penny, They make it way more secure than just leaning the top of the ladder against whatever (and definitely not the gutter).

You want unusual problems?

Living on a ridge, high winds would part the ends of the gutter from the house. I would go up and secure the clips, but they would let go in another windstorm. Well, the unusual thing is that being up here, the winds come from BELOW. So, I epoxied some small “L” brackets to the bottom of each and and screwed them into the fascia.

The pic below is schematically what the wind sees of my gutters, now firmly in place and water-free.

Glad you have the ability and know how to do some projects like that yourself. I wonder how people can afford to own a home if they had to pay a handyman for every small repair or minor problem. Always thought about starting a small handyman business in retirement and just charge enough to stay in business. There are so many people that are clueless about any problem solving in home ownership.
