(6,581 posts)IF I do some things inside, I could start peppers and artichokes in about 2 -3 weeks. A little extra early lettuce and other cold stuff just to play around with in about 4 weeks.
I don't start in earnest until April, and it becomes warm enough to use my greenhouse without major (and EXPENSIVE) supplemental heat.
Honestly, I've found that things grow so much faster in the greenhouse than indoors under lights that it doesn't make a lot of difference.
The one thing I really SHOULD do indoors by mid-March for certain, though, are my extra early tomatoes, mainly 4th of July.

(57,936 posts)dill to lots of radishes. My tomato seedlings are looking good, but I think my basil is very slow.
This winter was great for growing vegetables because it has been warm. We shall see what the summer brings.

(21,716 posts)put it together myself today, got some starting soil and planting units, and planted some seeds. since it's so early (although warmer than usual for late winter), i started two flats of peas (i looooove fresh peas), kale, lettuce, chard, and spinach. i was one of the lucky recipients of seeds of change's seed promotion last year, so we'll see how that goes.
looking forward to summer crops this year! last year's crops really sucked, except for my cukes and peppers. i never even got a zucchini! also, decided to do pole beans (kentucky wonder) instead of bush, as i've been told you can get a bigger crop.
oh, and i'm in northern cal, region 9.

(11,243 posts)Decided on Black Krim as my heirloom and nice variety of cherries. Will get the lettuce, parsley, leeks, kale and radishes started tomorrow or by the weekend at the latest.

(11,243 posts)So you just grow the greens in the pots full time? I am going to do that! I have a well protected south facing wall on my deck. Bet I could grow almost anything there with little protection this time of year.

(60,493 posts)so it is a protected way to do so. I will be preparing the main bed and installing my motion activated sprinklers in a few weeks - we eat so many greens that I could never grow enough in pots - we plant 3-4 20 foot rows to fulfill our salad and stir fry addiction all spring long!
