Some new hybrids I made as a start for a breeding project - are coming along. But right now...it is depressing to not be able to go out and pick a hand ful of Sun Gold to snack on!

I had one overwinter on the deck and it gave me very early tomatoes this spring, but it didn't make it through the summer. I could have watered it better. No frost yet, and I want to cover some plants in the garden when I know a frost is coming to see if I can extend the season. One year I planted tomatoes in old tires and was able to pick tomatoes for Christmas dinner.

My favorite variety. I bought some starts labeled "Roma" a few years ago but when mature they were huge so I did some research - clearly they were oxhearts.

of the big pink variety Ponderosa in the early 1920s - a bit later, a yellow orange one was developed. So the heart shaped types have only been available from seed companies for less than 100 years. Of course, they probably were present in this or that garden around the country, since bees and just normal mutation rates lead to new varieties for those lucky enough to have it happen in their garden!

Now you can get heart shaped varieties in white, yellow, yellow with red swirls, green, purple, pink, and various stripes!

who had immigrated to the US, I assumed that tomatoes found popularity with the immigrants. I do know that there are so many more tomato products here than in other parts of the country even today.

Early Girl and Patio Heirloom. Next year I plan on four pots will stagger to keep production at a stead pace. Tomatoes are a minimum gardening for me. The Early Girl has produced more than 200 tomatoes and me and my wife have no problem eating them all. A tomato salad with cut up tomatoes and a light dressing almost every night helps keep the pile smaller. Thanks for sharing your story.
