Verrrry Big Problem.

My rear neighbors replaced their not-very-old wood fence with one of those awful 6' tall white PVC fences.

This blindingly bright and glaring, west-facing eyesore is a good 100' long and at one point in my backyard is only 20' from my house.

What would be a selection of fast growing shrubs that I could use to disguise this fence and cut down on the glare?

I'm in Zone 5 and have a partly shady rear yard. I'm thinking lilac, high bush blueberry, witch hazel, or summer sweet.

Any other suggestions?

1. Kudzu oughta do it... then you can get a couple of billy goats to keep it in check...

I'm sure your kind neighbors will just love the goats...

2. I would go with lilacs.

You can even get creative with the colors. The butterfly bush is my favorite because it smells better than the others even though they smell nice too.

3. Honeysuckle grows fast. You might also try growing vines on it.

Virginia creeper might work since it grows really fast. Trumpet vine also grows fast and it attracts hummingbirds.

5. Forsythia

They do well in zone 5. Early bloom of yellow. Grow quickly

6. Cryptomeria is a very fast growing evergreen .. but gets very large.

I planted four tree-formed Osmanthus fortunei (Tea Olive) to screen a fence and attenuate noise. They are more managable size-wise than Cryptomeria. I also considered tree-formed Burfordii holly, but decided to go with the Tea Olive.

7. You'll want an evergreen hedge, I should think.

Unless your winters do not have enough sunlight to reflect much.
