The military tribunal hearings against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other alleged 9/11 conspirators have been stalled as the judge is suffering from a detached retina but has not been flown out for urgent medical care because of an apparent dispute with his medical insurance company.

According to his wife, Keith Parrella, a US marine colonel, is in danger of losing sight in the affected eye because of the delay. Jennifer Parrella complained on Twitter about the US military’s medical insurer, Tricare.

“Tricare – it’s been nine hours and 9/11 war court judge Col Parrella needs emergency surgery but is still waiting for Tricare to approve a plane to air evac him to the US for surgery. Every minute matters. How is this OK?” she said in a tweet.

Tricare, which provides healthcare for active military personnel and veterans, did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.
