Four years ago, writer Dennis Liu published the comic book Raising Dion, which told the story of a single black mother raising a son who begins to develop superpowers. A year later, Liu turned that comic book into a short film that caught the eye of Michael B. Jordan, himself a silver screen superhero in Fantastic Four (and eventual supervillain in Black Panther). Jordan acquired the rights to the short to develop into a Netflix series, which is finally hitting the streaming platform next month. This was written in September. I enjoyed binge-ing it last weekJordan produces and stars in Raising Dion as the father of the titular Dion, who disappears shortly before his son discovers his superpowers. https://www.slashfilm.com/raising-dion-trailer/

(8,709 posts)In my lifetime, I'm thrilled to see many openings to tell PoC stories in our own way. I'm looking forward to Liu's next one about an Asian-American super hero kid.

(4,249 posts)I'm only about half-way through it -- just don't have a lot of free time -- but I'm enjoying each episode. High-quality scripts and good actors. Such a wonderful twist on the usual superhero origin story, to concentrate on his mother. And seemed, as far as I could tell, to be very comfortable with portraying a black family, as opposed to a white family just painted black. Watching his mother wrestle with when to have The Talk with Dion was so wrenching, but it was counterbalanced so well with just their joy with each other.

(8,709 posts)could easily have been dismissed and still be a good story. But bringing those elements in; strength of family, ties with and help from community, unemployment, sorrow, love, the delightful joys and comedy, physical disability together with super power in diverse environments tells a much richer story. The Talk scene was heart-wrenching and well done and had to happen. I'm so glad it wasn't left out and I'd say the heart of the story of a mom protecting her son from the warped perception of some in the world.
