NonFic of the week 19 November

Late in getting to this, but nobody else is doing it, so no biggie.

My non-fic for the week will be MT Anderson's Symphony for the City of the Dead. As a classical music fan and a history buff, this YA book will combine two of my favorite subjects. Anderson discusses the Siege of Leningrad, and how it influenced composer Dmitri Shostakovich's 7th symphony. Then there are the twin terrors Shostakovich endured from both living under a siege and having a, shall we say, fragile relationship with the Stalinist regime.

It'll be a can't-put-down book for me, but I can't speak for anyone else.

So what non-fiction is everyone else reading this week?

...The Story of Chinese Food. I've been a fan of her cookbooks for some years, which are not only authoritative but also a joy to read. This is different, not a cookbook but a history and philosophy of Chinese cooking. It's quite good. It's basically meant to explain Chinese cuisine to western readers.

Also on my desk are The Disappearance of Butterflies by Josef Reichholf and The Man Who Organized Nature: The Life of Linnaeus by Gunnar Broberg.
