the long wait

the long wait

a life has been a long wait to reach the final end
steps taken both known and those still unaware
accumulated love and hate begin at last to blend
tangled up in vines grown in the time of despair
it is a long wait for the life to find its last decline
sharp jagged edges gouge the delicate soft skin
sliding on a rusty dull knife hoping for a last climb
feeling the tattled shroud winding through the sin
the long wait nearly done dwindling sands trickle
clocks start stop stutter hesitation marks the hour
a heart declares the race won flames flicker fickle
staring out of the clutter the eyes close and cower
there is nothing to expect a spring is wound down
as all the memories reflect yet only death is found
