Shame

Guilt, a weight upon my shoulders
Too weak to carry, too narrow for the breadth
Of my many sins against humanity
Against the world at large

But then, who am I?
A tiny ant in a continent of sand
Nothing in the grand scheme of things
How can my deeds cause so much harm?

I am ashamed of my own weakness.

--

Staring at the television,
The voices a constant babble
Of nothing meaningful
All insipid ramblings
From the influencers
Drunken drivers of greed
Pushing and pulling towards the abyss
Lemmings ready to leap.

How can I continue to watch this?
My country dies every day
Over and over again,
The punishment is great
The children cannot read
The adults are no better
Their words are useless drivel
Vomited upon my ears

My country attacks the outsiders
Not enemies, but allies
Is this really my country?
It seems like we are lost
Wandering through the darkest wood
Without a lantern
Not even a match
To light our way home.

I am so ashamed.
Can we ever be forgiven?
