Gun battle in Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque Police took three people into custody following a gun battle Monday night near Montgomery and Carlisle.

Two of the suspects have been identified by police as Ja'Karl Ahmed Jenkins and Andre Robinson.
Jenkins told officers that he and Robinson fired shots at a vehicle, in retaliation for a previous shooting.

Both roads were shut down and police urged residents in the Canyon Vista Apartments to shelter in place as officers searched for the suspects.
The first suspect surrendered when officers arrived on scene.

Just before 9 PM, those two suspects who were at large surrendered after scaling the roof of the Canyon Vista Apartments.
Police say those two suspects were armed with a rifle (another news story says an AR-15) and a shotgun.
Late Monday night, police were searching the area for those weapons.

Investigators are still trying to piece together how the gun battle unfolded.
Details are slim, but they told Action 7 News that the 3 suspects were involved and that several cars were riddled with bullet holes.

The gun battle also triggered several accidents in the middle of Montgomery. At least one of those vehicles belonged to one of the suspects, police say.
The gun battle left two people injured, and police say they were both innocent bystanders.

The first, a man who was caught in the crossfire. We're told he was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and is in stable condition.
The other was a young girl. Police say her family's car was hit with gunfire, and that she suffered minor injuries after broken glass cut her.

We asked APD if this incident was gang related, they said they were still investigating.

(This happened last night on the opposite side of the apartment complex where I live. Says cops warned residents to not leave their homes.
I didn’t find out about it until this morning)

Crimes like this have been increasing exponentially, and there simply aren't enough cops around here. It's like whack-a-mole. I listen to the ABQ public safety scanner online and cannot believe the amount of crime in this relatively small Southwestern city.

BUT--mayoral election is coming up October 3. Keller wants to increase the police force by 400 and says we can afford it. Other candidates are talking 100 or so and don't seem to appreciate how bad the shortage is.

That was a crazy situation and there are more like it. It's like the Wild West around here.
