NASCAR isnt the place youd expect to find a new electric vehicle make its debut, but the racing car company, on Sunday, threw the automotive world a curve ball, unveiling an electric stock car that boats twice the horsepower of the cars in its races.
The prototype debuted at the Chicago Street Race and can produce 1,000 kW at peak power and is best suited for road courses and short oval tracks, the organization said. Developed in collaboration with Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota, the vehicle was built by NASCAR engineers.
Despite the strength of the RV, NASCAR made it clear it has no plans to move away from its gasoline-based vehicles anytime soon, saying in a press release while NASCAR is committed to the historic role of the combustion engine in racing, it is also committed to decarbonizing its operations and reducing its own carbon footprint to zero across its core operations by 2035 through electrification and innovative solutions.
The EV put on display is powered by three electric motors. One operates the front wheels, while two others power the back. Together, theyre capable of producing up to 1,300 horsepower. That sort of power could convince fans of NASCAR, who are often skeptics about electric vehicles, of the technologys promise.

(10,175 posts)G suits for the drivers won't make the show better. Nor will unlimited speed, or moving the spectators a mile away.

(69,808 posts)In the industry from which I retired, I've seen 50HP agitator motors that look about twice the size of a 7HP lawnmower engine.
Also, from a racing perspective, the motors can be made longer, but lower in diameter, meaning they can be mounted lower.
When added to replacement weight at axle height, the center of mass falls below the geometric center plane, making the car both more powerful & stable.
If they can figure out how to go 500 miles at 200mph, the ICE cars wouldn't stand a chance.

(69,808 posts)I meant no criticism. Just that once range issues are resolved, an ICE car has no chance against a high performance e-car. Just from the perspective of no pit stops for fuel! Aren't half the pit stops for gas, whole the other half is gas & tires? Half the pit stops is over a lap of lead!

(23,757 posts)Going fast over a curving course for five hundred miles, not so easy. They can't stop for a two-hour pit stop to recharge the battery, so they need a battery that's quick to swap for a charged one while changing the tires. And the tires will wear out fast due to weight.
At least they're quieter than the internal combustion engine race cars. Less whining, from the cars.
