Used to compact roads. Now they are diesel. Some have the availability to fill their 'wheels' with water to add weight.

and to our gang of 7 to 8 year boys, it was the highlight of summer. That and the annual visit of the land scraper, which we called road scraper, because we only saw it used on roads.

Great theater for bored kids: land scraper > steam roller > tack oil truck.

The oil tamed the dirt road dust. And it got on everything until it dried. Car wheels, fenders, bicycle tires, socks, sneakers, animal paws ...
