Great Backyard Bird Count now in progress

Is anyone here participating?
It’s been cold and windy after raining all last night, and we’ve had a few snow flurries. My yard is full of cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, wrens, mourning doves, juncos, goldfinches, song sparrows and chipmunks. The chipmunks don’t count, but I love them. I’ve also seen crows and a red-tailed hawk today. They nest in the woods here. Watching for the towhee families that nest down around the creek but haven’t seen them yet today.

Once upon a time I taught science and history, mostly to 6th graders. We counted birds at school on Friday, and many counted birds at home during the weekend. My dad, of blessed memory, shared his love of birds with me from as far back as I can remember, and I loved passing it along to my young scholars. L’dor vador. From generation to generation.
