Pileated Woodpecker with Nestlings

1. First time I ever saw one of those...

I wondered if I had stepped through some strange portal into another reality. I had never seen such a large woodpecker and did not know these even existed.

When it flew past me, in a forest, I couldn't tell what it was and it startled me. When it was moving about on the surface of the tree, it sounded like a cat scrambling around whilst clinging to the bark. It was very strange moment.

2. Their song reminds me of a jungle

4. So that is what they sound like.

I have heard them not knowing what I was hearing. It's kind of like the chattering call that the Northern Flickers make.

6. It reminds me of the movie,

“Jeremiah Johnson” with Robert Redford. It was meant to be an eerie sound in that movie, and it was. There was very little dialogue, so the calls seemed especially important. Thanks for the photo and video!

3. They are in northern N.J. We hear them on our club hikes but they are difficult to spot.

I thought they were the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker but Woody was inspired by an Acorn Woodpecker.

5. Saw a big one last night.

I also got a picture of mama and papa eagle sitting on the branches of a tall tree on our farm. Sadly, I’m not smart enough to post it here.
