"Get The F*** Off"

The San Francisco 49ers ask their research and development department to produce analytics that measure traits their coaches prize at each position.

For San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, the affinity is for players with explosiveness from the stance, inspired the "GTFO" grade, which, general manager John Lynch said, measures how quickly a lineman moves within the first 2 yards after a ball is snapped.

“They’ve come up with a way to measure that,” Lynch said, “and (fifth-round defensive end pick Robert) Beal’s right at the top of it, so that’s something. We’re always talking about getting length and explosion out of that stance, and Beal’s a guy that kind of embodies that.”

So why was the guy with elite skill not off the board when the 49ers grabbed him deep in the fifth round at pick No. 173?

Beal made just 10 starts in five seasons at Georgia, partly because he was a subpar run defender and his unrefined pass-rush moves didn’t allow him to take more advantage of his speed and length (though Beal ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the combine and had the third-longest arms (34 5/8 inches) among the 32 edge rushers).

It's the "GTFO" burst that excites Kocurek and Lynch. If Beal has the work ethic to match, this could be a huge addition for an already good San Francisco pass rush.

Yes, the percentage is players taken in the later rounds are projects or just wind up becoming backups at best. But every NFL team has 5th round players who are contributors.

Occasionally, a 5th round player excels, like this guy who is going into Canton this coming August.
