I'm too old for this shit lol. 325k people all leaving at once what a cluster. This was my 20th the first being in 1977 when AJ won his 4th, sat right behind his pit box. Back in the day we'd go down on Thursday evening and camp. They would open up the North 40 very early Friday morning for Carb day and we could camp there until the race on Sunday. Some crazy experiences during that time, that I wouldn't trade for anything, before they stopped letting people into the north 40 early. I wanted to round up to an even 20 so I went this year. Unless you live close by or are camping it's a holy shit waiting in line for fucking ever everywhere. My 500 days are over unless I can get some camping passes lol, I'm just too old to deal with that chaos. Btw, it was a great race and being there is a must at least once if you're a race fan, just plan ahead.

(17,273 posts)I'm told that there's NOTHING in the auto racing world that matches it - at least in the US.

(2,609 posts)I've been to all of the big Neckcar tracks and races there's nothing close to this race. Especially back in the 70's and 80's from a fan POV. It was absolute mayhem back then. I've got so many memories from that race back then it's crazy. I went down last weekend for qualifying and practice. I had never sat in turn one for anything there until last weekend, my god. I ducked the first time a car came at me at 240mph lol. If anyone's never been, make it a bucket list entry even if you don't like auto racing. Its a thrill ride.

(3,294 posts)when that was still a thing. It was THE place to go on Senior Skip Day, back in the day. But unless the track is moved to the outskirts of town (BLASPHEMY!!) or the city buys up all the land around there and improves the road situation, it will just keep sucking harder to get in and out of there.

(2,609 posts)Some friends and I were actually gonna try and buy a house down there so we'd have a place to stay and to rent the yard out to campers lol. I bought a ticket yesterday on a whim. Its been a 16 hour day but it was worth it for #20. Took me 4 hours to get home 60 miles north of Indy lol.

(16,953 posts)went to a lot of races. Before the split, it was sheer mayhem. After....it was still fun, but the party calmed down a bit. Christ, used to be the entire month of May. Good times! Hope you had fun...
