Shoot like a girl

Ashley Hartsook’s first year as a bowhunter was pretty darn good, starting with
taking down a 6-by-6 bull elk with one shot last season.

“We put the sneak on him and found him bedded down with four cows in a steep
ravine,” Hartsook recalled this week. “The wind was pretty good at the time, so
we sat there for half an hour waiting for him to stand up so I could get a good
shot at him. Finally, the wind changed and he stood up; I flung an arrow and got him.

“It was pretty exciting and intense; it was my first time getting my elk. I will never forget it.”

For an encore, she got a 5-by-5 mulie buck while out with her boyfriend Lucas Zemlicka.

2. I've never hunted big game.

Rabbits and pheasants are what we hunted when I was young.

Many of my cousins in Montana are elk hunters.

Her exploits {in the article} impress me too.

It takes great skill setting up/getting close to a game animal who defenses (nose, ears, eyes) are geared to avoid just that. Kudos!

3. This article makes me want to be motivated.

My daughter and wife love to shoot, but I'm the only person in the family with a real bow. They shoot my sons "toy" compound that's only rated for 28# and really small for either of them.

I suppose I need to come off some cash and invest in a couple of good female sized bows. (My compound is a 1994...LOL) So maybe I need to invest in a bunch of bows. We've talked about what a great range we could have in the back field but have never acted on building one, mostly because of the lack of archery equipment.

Thanks for sharing the article.

4. Have you and your family seen "Hunger Games?" According to some outdoors

groups, the movie has sparked interest in bow hunting, much as "A River Runs Through It" has increased the number of fly fishers.

6. My son ordered a crossbow (well we ordered it after he picked it out)

this week...but he ordered it because the neighbor across the street from us (11yo) harvested a doe on doe youth day, and his best friend on our right (7yo) goes hunting with his GF with their crossbow.

He decided he had to have one, so he went online found one in his price range and asked if I'd read the reviews. LOL I did and his mom checked out.

Now it looks like we'll have to go hunting sooner than Thanksgiving week.

edit to add: Hunger Games did make the kids dig out my son's old (too small) compound and start shooting it again.

7. Been pulling my bow for the last month or so.

I shoot a Bear Alaskan, it pulls 70# at 30". Really stretches the shoulder and arm muscles!
For those who don't know the bow is a recurve, not a compound!

Also been loading and shooting the Flinters, and the Sharps for gun season.
