he took a Canadian team that wasn't expected to even compete for a medal. First beating the host nation, then going up against the #1 ranked team in the world, a club they have never beaten, and outplaying them for long stretches, losing only on a controversial call that won't be forgotten..

Herdman has raised Canadian soccer to a new level...he should be congratulated.

I watch the EPL, CL, follow Arsenal religiously, and of course all the international competitions..and I've never seen a delay call like that..Oh, there have been calls on goalkeepers stalling, but it's always a yellow card..

The Canadians feel like they were robbed...and they have a right to be..

She had been warned. Abby Wambach played it smartly.

Canada's coach is whining, as is Sinclair. The coach was bellyaching about the US's "dirty tactics" BEFORE the game; it was obvious he was trying to set something up. Everything he accused the US of doing, Canada did. The US played a pretty clean game, actually, while #14 on Canada's team got away with a bunch of nasty fouls.

Boo frickin' hoo.

That delay call is never made..and I mean NEVER.

The call was outrageous, messed up and now overshadowed a wonderful match..

NBC American soccer commentator Kyle Martino:

“My heart goes out to Canadian players, because it was such a tough moment,” Martino said. “To be playing so well, to bring your best game, against the best team in the world. And then to have the game flipped on its end because of a call like that? If I was playing in that game, it would have drove me nuts.”

It's a discretionary rule. The gk had been warned SEVERAL times.

#14 Tancredi should have been red-carded after stomping on Carli Lloyd's head!

Steve Davis NBC Sports soccer writer:

I’ll address the less popular issue, this unpleasant little matter that I’m sure most U.S. soccer supporters would prefer not to mention:

What a horrible moment for Norwegian referee Christina Pedersen to make such a highly significant decision, to award an indirect free kick to the United States in the 78th minute, adjudging Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod of time-washing.

And make no mistake, an indirect free kick from 17 yards may not be a gift from the heavens (as a penalty kick might be), but it’s a wonderfully fortuitous turn of events for the attacking team – especially one that is a goal down with 12 minutes remaining.

I’ve watched more professional soccer matches than I can possible count. (Best, ridiculously wild-ass guess: somewhere north of 2,000.) I have never – no exaggeration here, never – seen that called.

Even an American national soccer writer...

I like the USWNT okay, but I'm objective enough to admit they were, let say...extremely fortunate at this Olympics. You've offered virtually nothing to suggest otherwise. Therefore, I'm forced to declare myself the winner of this limited debate. Thank you for your participation..

US defenders have all brought up the supposed missed red card as a way to defend the controversial pro US calls late. Why not defend the ref's delay and subsequent handball call on it's merits, other than changing the subject?

It's as if the US media put out the official talking points, which are now being regurgitated by blind patriots everywhere, with little regard for the truth. Now, I'm not necessarily claiming you're engaging in such tactics..just an observation.

But I'm sure you know that.

It was Canada's day to be on the receiving end. Again, it was controversial, and it was discretionary.

Canada needs to move on.

that decide games...The difference here for me, is not so much that it was a bad call, but that the delay call itself is NEVER made. You do realize the "6 second rule" could easily be applied to keepers 10 times or more a match? Solo herself violates it regularly. All keepers do. To have such a rule suddenly arbitrarily applied at such a crucial juncture violates the spirit of the game.

In the face of the nonsense pushed by Canada's coach (and the players under his leadership) before and after the game, it would be ridiculous not to bring this up. It has nothing to do with patriotism. It has everything to do with a coach who clearly created an ugly culture within his team, tries to play head games with the refs, and then gets angry when they backfire. Pffft.

Oh, and I like how you spin your attack here, btw.
