I can understand why these countries want US citizens to register, but it's yet another step one must take to travel.

them to know which ones of us are responsible.

I've applied for US Global Citizen which will require an interview on my return, in NY JFK.

As I have a family visa here in the Netherlands. If you have a residency visa in the EU, you are exempt, and can travel freely within the Schengen area freely.
