wonderful movie. It was more of a political thriller than a movie about Catholicism. And th4e acting was great.

The two factions could be seen as a metaphor for our country now.

the awards and that cast is enough to bring me right on in no matter the subject. I see I would have to pay for it but now I know it is also a book. I would probably like that just as well so I will be satisfied until I can see it. Thanks for mentioning the book.

The cast looks great. I have no real interest in religion so it is mainly watching the cast wind their way through a good story with great writing. I hope it is available soon.

I'm not Catholic, either, but I was fascinated by the setting and the process the characters were involved in, of electing a new pope. I watched it once, read the book, then watched it again, because it's that good!

This is probably not a movie for anyone who is strongly anti-Catholic or anti-religious in general. It's about a group of very religious men who are largely depicted as sincerely trying to do their duty to the best of their abilities, despite very strong differences of opinion on certain matters. There are some very interesting plot twists and certain characters are revealed to be not quite what they seem by the time it's over, but even the "bad guys" come off as misguided rather than having truly evil intentions.

Fantastic performances are delivered by Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow, as well as some lesser known actors. I highly recommend this movie to people who enjoy well-played, layered characters and a suspenseful plot that is cerebral rather than action-oriented.

I wasn’t as thrilled with Stanley Tucci or John Lithgow’s performance probably because I grew up catholic and was an altar boy, lector, etc and just wasn’t convinced they were priests. Ralph Fiennes and the rest of the cast (Isabella Rossellini triggered a few memories of my old nun teachers) I thought were great. The visuals and especially the musical score added greatly to the suspense.

To touch on ShazzieB and your other comments, this review in the Catholic magazine Angelus jumped on the anti-catholic position and skewers the movie to a point of being a laughable hit piece. I mean it wasn’t THAT bad. I’m also guessing there was concerted effort to discredit the movie based on the large number of single star reviews and my long ago memory of some announcements made during masses.
