He was posing the philosophical question about relative vs. absolute truth and then turned around and went with relative, leaving it up to the whims of the crowd in order to not take responsibility for the decision or admit to a higher value.

He seemed to be into not taking blame, as per his hand washing routine. He was fence sitting. Sounds like somebody we know.
