Last night, I watched as Israeli television reporters explained that they would not broadcast Hamas’ staged handover of four dead hostages.

One journalist said he had wondered whether Hamas would hold one of their “cynical” ceremonies with dead hostages, “and the answer is yes.”

This morning Israeli television — 2 p.m. in Israel, 6 a.m. in Chicago — was still entirely and gravely focused on the absolute a sadness enveloping Israeli society as Kfir, Ariel, and Shiri Bibas returned dead, along with 84-year-old Oded Lifschitz, who also returned dead.

This is one of those philosophical questions that is so tricky. There were many in the Jewish community who didn't want bodies of the Shoah to be shown and wanted the camps leveled. Frankly, I think that would have been a HUGE mistake. I understand not wanting one's beloved family members remains/corpses all over the nightly news, but....

1. This morning The Times of Israel is reporting that the Bibas children were "murdered with bare hands"

and that their bodies were then mutilated.

The IDF statement came hours after it was discovered that Hamas had not returned the body of the boys’ mother Shiri, sending instead the body of a Gazan woman and later claiming that there had been a mix-up with the bodies during an Israeli airstrike.

But Hagari said the evidence clearly showed that they were not killed in an airstrike as Hamas claimed.

“Contrary to Hamas’s lies, Ariel and Kfir were not killed in an airstrike. Ariel and Kfir Bibas were murdered in cold blood by terrorists,” he said. “The terrorists did not shoot the two young boys — they killed them with their bare hands. Afterward, they committed horrific acts to cover up these atrocities.”

“This assessment is based on both forensic findings from the identification process and intelligence that supports these findings. We have shared these findings, intelligence and forensics with our partners around the world so they can verify it,” said Hagari.

Their father, Yarden Bibas, asks that this news be reported far and wide so that the world understands the barbarity of Hamas.

2. I am of mixed heart on this . . .

. . . on the one hand, showing the actual extent of the barbarity, as in with the 45-minute horror video from October 7, which shows beheadings, rapes, burnings, and other things I don't even want to write about, might put an end to the BS from the truly bitter and hate-filled antisemetic people who insist that none of that happened. On the other hand, respect for the deceased is paramount, and videos of their murder would drastically harm the memories of their loved ones. In addition, I can't imagine such scenes not being used by the truly perverted as snuff films that they would get off on.

Personally, I hold with not showing anything that might invade the privacy of the dead or that could lead to emotional harm for their loved ones.
