As egg prices soar, US Customs and Border Protection cracks down on egg smuggling
(CNN) As consumers face skyrocketing egg prices, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports an increase of people attempting to smuggle eggs across the border from Mexico.
The CBPs San Diego Field Office reported Thursday seeing a 158% increase in egg interceptions since the fiscal year of 2024.
A CBP spokesperson told CNN the agency has seen a 29% increase in eggs being detained at ports of entry this fiscal year when compared to the same time-period in the last fiscal year (October 2023 February 2024).
Egg prices have jumped to all-time highs due in part to an outbreak of avian flu, or bird flu, that has been afflicting egg-laying hens in the US since 2022. Across the past three years, about 166 million birds have been affected by the deadly avian flu, according to the US Agriculture Department.

Is Trump making America affordable again?
US President Trump ran his campaign on a pledge to make America affordable again, following the inflationary crisis during Bidens administration. But since the beginning of his presidency, the cost of living crisis, including the cost of staple grocery items and rent, has persisted.
Peoples Dispatch spoke to economist Richard Wolff, who outlined that prices are shaped by many factors, and only a few of those are under the control of any president.
Trump did what American politicians usually do, which is take a cheap shot at his political enemies by blaming them for something bad going on in this case, inflation, Wolff said. Now that Trump is president, hes going to suffer from other politicians blaming him in exactly the way he blamed them, for inflation.
Skyrocketing prices experienced by billions in the US includes a major egg shortage, with egg prices soaring and supplies shrinking as bird flu (H5N1) outbreaks continue worldwide. The US Department of Agriculture has predicted an egg price increase of 41% in 2025. In January, egg prices increased as much as 15%, to an all-time high of USD 4.95 for a dozen large Grade A eggs.
